Why we think you should study Mathematics and Science in Germany

Mathematics and Science

Germany is one of the best-known countries for Mathematics and Science. But what makes one country better in Mathematics and Science than another? It’s difficult to measure but we can start by looking at how much money is spent on R&D, how many research papers are published, and how many students graduated in Mathematics and Science.

If you are looking to study Mathematics or Science, read on to find out why you should consider studying in Germany.

Well funded

In 2020, €107 billion were invested in research and development in Germany. The German government contributed about 30%, while the industry funded about €71 billion. The rest are funded by various foundations across Germany. In 2021, these foundations contributed €18.7 million for education, science and cooperation between business and science. In addition, the EU also runs an initiative called “Horizon Europe” where they committed €95.5 billion to fund research and development initiatives across Europe.

Many well-known research organisations in Germany

There are many research organisations in Germany but some of the more well-known ones are:

Fraunhofer Society

The largest organization for applied research and development in Europe. It has 76 institutes across Germany, focusing on different fields of applied science. There are 29,000 employees working for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and it has an annual research budget of about €2.8 billion.

Helmholtz Association

Helmholtz Association is a union of 18 science research centres. It is also the largest scientific organization in Germany with an annual budget of €5.8 billion.

Leibniz Association

The Leibniz Association consists of about 100 non-university/independent research institutions with a wide range of research in natural, engineering and environmental sciences, economics, spatial and social sciences and the humanities. In total, they employ 20,000 people and have an annual budget of €1.9 billion.

Max Planck Society

The Max Planck Society is a leading research organization in Germany. There are 30 Nobel Laureates among its ranks and it publishes 15,000 publications yearly in renowned scientific journals. Its annual budget in 2022 is €1.98 billion.

University students, including Malaysian students, will have the opportunity to actively participate in research projects, gain practical laboratory experience, and work with leading experts in their field.

Receive world-class education and specialization options

Students can choose from about 400 universities. Most, if not all of them, have well-equipped research facilities. There will be plenty of opportunities to be involved in research, projects or competitions.

Not only that, there are many options for you to specialize. For example, if you like to study Biology, you can choose to specialize in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or Genetics. You will get to explore different areas of interest.

Internship and working part-time as learning opportunities

Unlike shorter internships at local universities, you will be required to intern for up to six months during your studies in Germany. You will be able to learn and experience what it’s like to work in research during your internship.

Apart from your internship, you can also work part-time helping out with research at the university or even at companies. This is common in Germany and many science students prefer this over working at cafes. If you are working on campus, you are allowed to work longer hours compared to working at a company or research centre.

Great salaries and benefits

After graduating, if you don’t already have a job offer, you can apply for a visa to stay on for up to 18 months to look for a job. German institutions encourage work-life balance and that is one work culture which is quite different compared to Malaysia’s. After working for 3 to 5 years, it’s really up to you if you want to stay on in Germany or explore working in other countries.
